Aloo ki tikka - Indian potatocakes

These potato cakes you can eat on the streets in Rajasthan. You can make all kinds of variations. The snacks are a good starter or you can serve them as a sidedish.

What you need:
  • 500 gr sweet potatoes, cut into large pieces
  • 150 gr peas
  • 4 tbsp oil
  • 2 green chillies, finely chopped
  • 1/2 red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cm of ginger, grated
  • 2 kaffir lime leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ground tumeric
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tbps chickpea flour (besan flour)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
How to prepare it:
  1. Cook the potatoes untill tender enough to mash.
  2. Drain well untill they are dry, but still warm.
  3. Cook the peas and drain.
  4. Mash the potatoes and add the peas.
  5. Put 1 tbsp of oil in a small pan and fry the chilli, onion, ginger and spices for 1 minute, or untill really aromatic. 
  6. Add this to the mash with the kaffir lime leaves and the flour and mix well.
  7. Mix in the lemon juice and some salt to taste.
  8. Make small balls of it and shape to patties.
  9. Heat 3 tbsp of oil in a frying pan and add the patties in batches. 
  10. Fry them on each side until crisp and golden brown.
  11. Serve hot.
